Falmouth names new boys’ hockey coach

Falmouth High School named Adam Nicholas, 25, as its new boys’ hockey coach Tuesday. Nicholas replaces Scott Rousseau, who stepped down following last season. Nicholas played college hockey in Boston, is the owner and founder of the Stride Envy ice hockey skating school, the skating and skills coach for the Lewiston Maineiacs and has managed player skating sessions from the Quebec Major Junior League. Nicholas is the director of player development and on the Board of Directors for the Maine Renegades and is studying for his masters at the University of Southern Maine.

Yarmouth Junior Legion baseball team still alive

The Yarmouth Post No. 91 Junior American Legion baseball team was battling Gray-New Gloucester in a best-of-three playoff series at press time. Yarmouth went 12-6 in the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed for the tournament. Falmouth Post No. 164, which went 10-8 this summer, was eliminated by Sanford’s Cole Post No. 19 in the opening round of the playoffs, 13-11. Cumberland, after an 8-10 season, lost, 11-0, to Libby Mitchell in the opening round of the playoffs. Freeport Medical Center finished 4-14 this season and didn’t qualify.

West falls in Lobster Bowl

The West team lost Saturday’s Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic football game, 40-35. The East won for the fourth time in five seasons, thanks to a 21-point outburst in the final period, which erased a nine-point deficit. Greely offensive lineman Brandon Hethcoat participated.

Falmouth coaching openings

Falmouth High School has openings for coaches in varsity boys’ ice hockey, varsity assistant boys’ ice hockey, junior varsity boys’ ice hockey, and girls’ first team soccer. FMI, tlivingston@fps.k12.me.us.

Greely football holding golf tournament

The first annual Cumberland/North Yarmouth Greely football golf tournament, with all proceeds benefiting the program, will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, at Toddy Brook in North Yarmouth. Cost is $100 per player or $400 per foursome. Players will have an opportunity to win a new Ford Mustang or Suzuki 4-wheeler with a hole-in-one. There will be other prizes and contests as well. Southern Maine Flame tryouts

The Southern Maine Flame ASA softball team will hold tryouts for its U-16 and U-18 squads Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 14 at 9 a.m., at Wainwright Field in South Portland.
