Hockey playoffs underway

The boys’ hockey playoffs began Tuesday with the quarterfinal round. Two-time defending Class A champion Falmouth earned the No. 1 seed in Western A after a 13-5 regular season, capped by a 13-0 home romp over Thornton Academy last week. The Yachtsmen hosted No. 8 Portland/Deering (7-11) in the quarterfinals. Falmouth beat Portland/Deering twice this season: 11-0 and 12-0. In Western B, Yarmouth overcame an 0-5 start and soared all the way to the No. 2 seed after finishing with 10-7-1 record. Tuesday, the Clippers hosted No. 7 Greely (3-14-1) in the quarterfinals. The Rangers earned the last spot after a 2-1 home win over Maranacook/Winthrop in the finale last week. Greely (which has now made the playoffs 15 years in a row) lost both meetings with Yarmouth this year (5-3 at home Jan. 3 and 4-0 in Yarmouth Feb. 11). The Western B semifinals are Friday. The Western A semifinals are Saturday. The Western A Final is Tuesday and the Western B Final Wednesday. The state finals are Saturday, March 7. All rounds will be contested in Lewiston. 

Freeport coaching vacancies

Player registration for the 2015 Falmouth Little League season is open. Lacrosse officiating classes offered

The Maine Women’s Lacrosse Officials’ Association is offering new umpire classes for adults. Classes will be held at Thornton Academy on March 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., Brunswick High School on March 2, 9, 16, 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., Falmouth High School on March 5, 12, 19, 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thomas College (dates and times to be announced). New officials must attend a minimum of three classes to qualify for the 2015 season. All newly trained umpires will receive instructions on how to register with U.S. Lacrosse.
