Yarmouth Little Leaguers compete in regionals

At press time, the Yarmouth 11-12 year-old Little League team, District 6 and State of Maine champions, needed one victory to advance to the championship round at the New England Regional in Bristol, Conn. Yarmouth opened with a 5-2 loss to Goffstown, N.H., bounced back to defeat Barre, Vt., 9-1, then were pushed to the brink of elimination with a 10-1 loss to Fairfield, Conn. Tuesday morning, Yarmouth played a make-or-break contest against Andover, Mass. A victory would have kept alive the team’s hopes of playing in the Little League World Series later this month.

WMC sweeps soccer all-star games

The Western Maine Conference senior men’s and women’s soccer teams got the better of their Southern Maine Activities Association counterparts last week at Westbrook High School in the 21st annual all-star soccer tournament. In the men’s game, Greely’s John Coyne scored a goal to lead the WMC to a 2-1 win. Other local players participating included Falmouth’s Michael Bloom, Freeport’s Ryan Farley, Greely’s Sean Ross, NYA’s Matthew Kibler and Yarmouth’s Campbell Belisle-Haley, Kyle Groves and Luke Pierce.

The WMC women also won 2-1 as Falmouth’s Abbey Cavalero and Yarmouth’s Danielle Torres scored goals. Yarmouth’s Rich Smith helped coached the WMC team. Other local players taking part included Falmouth’s Jess DiPhillippo and Elizabeth Estabrook, Freeport’s Katee Poulin, Greely’s Kelly Burrell and Yarmouth’s Natalie Salmon. Both WMC teams now hold a 10-4 advantage over the SMAA with seven ties.

Shays Grill wins men’s lax title

Shays Grill Pub is the 2011 Maine Elite Lacrosse men’s league champion. Shays defeated Siano’s, 12-10, in the championship game, as former Deering High standout Adam Rothbart and former Yarmouth star Rob Highland each had three goals.

Falmouth announces preseason first day schedule

The first day of the fall sports preseason at Falmouth High School is Monday. Football goes from 8-10:30 a.m. and 5-7:30 p.m. Boys’ soccer meets from 9-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. Girls’ soccer goes from 7-8 a.m. (11th and 12th graders and returning varsity players), 8-9 a.m. (9th and 10th graders and returning JV players) and from 3-5 p.m. Field hockey meets from 7-9 a.m. and 4:30-6 p.m. Cross country has sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Volleyball meets from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Golf tryouts are Aug. 26.

Freeport announces preseason first day schedule

The first day of the fall sports preseason at Freeport High School is Monday. Football meets from 8-10:30 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m. at the Pownal Road Recreation Field. Equipment and pads will be issued the night before at 6 p.m. Boys’ soccer meets from 8-11 a.m. Girls’ soccer goes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Field hockey meets from 8-11 a.m. Cross country goes from 5-6:30 p.m. and meets on the front lawn of the high school. Golf convenes at 3:30 p.m. at Toddy Brook. Cheering goes from 9-10:30 a.m., on the front lawn.

Freeport coaching openings

RSU5 has several coaching openings for the 2011-12 school year. Freeport High School is seeking coaches for first team boys’ soccer, girls’ junior varsity soccer, girls’ first team soccer, boys’ varsity, junior varsity and first team basketball, varsity Nordic and assistant Nordic skiing. At Freeport Middle School, there are openings for 8th grade boys’ soccer, 7th grade field hockey, Alpine skiing and winter cheering coaches.
