Continued excitement on the diamond, field, track and courts highlighted the week that was. Here’s the latest:

Girls’ lacrosse: NYA stays perfect

The North Yarmouth Academy girls’ lacrosse team took a 6-0 mark into
Tuesday’s home game against Greely (too late for print). The Panthers
got their sixth win last Tuesday, 12-3, at Deering behind three goals
apiece from senior Rachel Darby and junior Rachel Clegg. NYA, first in
the latest Eastern Class B Heal Points standings, goes to Cheverus
Thursday, then gets five days off to prepare for back-to-back road
showdowns at Yarmouth and Waynflete.

The Clippers bounced back from their lone loss Friday, winning 13-4
at Deering as seniors Lanier Bolmer and Hannah Coleman and sophomore
Danielle Torres each scored three times. Yarmouth (5-1 and third in
Eastern B) faced a test at dangerous Cape Elizabeth Tuesday (too late
for print), goes to Greely Thursday and plays host to Cheverus Friday
night.

Falmouth has won three straight after dropping its first three this
spring. The Yachtsmen eked out a 9-7 decision at Massabesic last
Tuesday (sophomore Laura Fay scored three times), downed host Cheverus
14-9 last Thursday (behind four Fay goals), then dispatched visiting
Marshwood 12-5 Saturday (senior Haley Jordan scored four). Falmouth
(3-3 and fourth in Western B) was at Scarborough Tuesday (too late for
print), visits Kennebunk Thursday and hosts Deering Saturday and Cape
Elizabeth next Tuesday.

Freeport split a pair of games last week. After losing 8-7 at South
Portland, the Falcons answered Friday with a 12-7 home win over Windham
(junior Emily Drummond scored four times). Freeport (fourth in Eastern
B) improved to 4-4 Monday after a 15-9 home win over McAuley (junior
Shelby Colvin had five goals). The Falcons host Bonny Eagle Thursday
and welcome Fryeburg next Tuesday.

Greely snapped a four-game season-opening skid last Wednesday with a
12-3 home victory over Deering. Senior Brittany Ames scored five times
to key the win. Friday, however, the Rangers fell to 1-5 after an 11-5
home loss to Cheverus. Greely (sixth in Western B) was at NYA Tuesday
(too late for print), hosts Yarmouth Thursday, then goes to York next
Tuesday.

Boys’ lax: Falmouth win streak at four

On the boys’ side, while Yarmouth was beating Portland in the “Game of the Year” (see story, page 15, for more on that one), rising power Falmouth continues to sizzle.

The Yachtsmen, who won 10-0 at York (behind four goals from junior
Mike Kane) and 8-6 at home over Freeport last week, defeated visiting
Bonny Eagle 10-2 Monday (behind Kane’s three goals and two assists) to
improve to 5-2 as they stretched their winning streak to four games.
Falmouth (second in the Western B Heals) was home with NYA Wednesday
(too late for print) and plays at Portland Friday night.

Freeport gave Falmouth fits in its loss, but couldn’t quite rally
for a win. The Falcons were coming off a 15-0 win at Westbrook where
senior Greg Townsend scored five times and classmate Alex Thompson
added four goals and four assists. Freeport (eighth in Eastern B) fell
to 1-7 Monday with a 7-3 loss at Scarborough. The Falcons hosted
Deering Wednesday (too late for print).

Don’t look now, but Greely has come to life. The Rangers have won
four in a row to improve to 4-3. Last Thursday, Greely had no trouble
with visiting Wells, winning 12-1 behind three goals from senior Steven
Chase. The Rangers (fourth in Western B) downed visiting Thornton
Academy 7-2 Monday (behind three goals from Teddy Russell). They were
at Cape Elizabeth in a playoff rematch Wednesday (too late for print),
host Thornton Academy Friday and play at NYA Tuesday.

Speaking of the Panthers, they couldn’t hold a 7-3 third quarter
lead last Wednesday against visiting Cape Elizabeth and went down to a
painful 11-9 defeat. They turned it around Saturday, however, getting
five goals from junior Gus Wellin in a 16-12 win at St. Dom’s. Monday,
NYA improved to 5-2 with a 15-9 home victory over Waynflete as junior
Cam Smith scored five times. The Panthers (fifth in Eastern B) were at
Falmouth Wednesday (too late for print), pay a visit to Deering Friday
and host Greely next Tuesday.

Baseball: Upset win for Freeport

Turning to hardball, where Greely visited Yarmouth in a showdown
Tuesday (please see story, page 15), another inspirational story has
taken center stage.

Just five days after its first win since 2007, the Freeport baseball
team shocked visiting Yarmouth, 5-3, Saturday. The Falcons got a strong
start from senior pitcher Jon Klages and clutch hitting from freshman
Jared Knighton and junior Kyle Moore. Freeport fell to 2-9 Monday after
a 6-5 (eight inning) loss at North Yarmouth Academy. The Falcons (16th
in the latest Western B Heals) went to Greely Wednesday (too late for
print) and host Falmouth Friday.

The Yachtsmen improved to 4-5 Monday after an impressive 14-3 win at
Poland. Junior Mitch Beaulieu earned the win on the mound and also
homered. Falmouth previously fell 9-8 at home to Lake Region Friday.
The Yachtsmen (15th in the standings) were home with Wells Wednesday
(too late for print), go to Freeport Friday and host Yarmouth Monday.

NYA’s win over Freeport Monday left it 8-3 on the year as the
Panthers continue to quietly put together their best Class C season to
date. NYA previously saw its four-game winning streak snapped with a
2-0 loss at St. Dom’s Friday. The Panthers (seventh in the Heals) were
home with Waynflete Wednesday (too late for print) and host Traip
Friday.

Softball: Falmouth heating up

On the girls’ side of the diamond, the Falmouth Yachtsmen won their
third game in four tries Monday, 7-0, at Poland, behind sophomore ace
Sarah Collmus (who is now 4-2 on the year). The Yachtsmen previously
held off visiting Lake Region 4-3 Friday. Falmouth (11th in the Western
B Heals) was home with Wells Wednesday (too late for print), goes to
Freeport Friday, hosts Yarmouth Monday and welcomes Cape Elizabeth
Wednesday of next week.

Speaking of the Falcons, they snapped a three-game skid Saturday
with a 5-4 (11 inning) home win over Yarmouth. Junior Hannah Schuchert
scored the winning run as Freeport improved to 3-7. After going to
Greely Wednesday (too late for print) and hosting Falmouth Friday, the
Falcons (14th in Western B) are idle until next Wednesday when they
welcome Gray-New Gloucester.

Greely has lost three straight and four of five. Last Wednesday, the
Rangers fell 3-0 at Gray-New Gloucester to drop to 4-6 on the year.
Greely (eighth in Western B) hoped to get back on the right track
Tuesday at Yarmouth (too late for print). The Rangers hosted Freeport
Wednesday, go to Poland Friday and are home with St. Dom’s Monday.

Yarmouth’s loss at Freeport was its second in a row (the Clippers
fell 6-0 at home to Cape Elizabeth last Wednesday). Yarmouth was home
with Greely Tuesday and at Gray-New Gloucester Wednesday (both games
were played after this edition went to print). The Clippers (15th in
Western B) host Fryeburg Friday and go to Falmouth Monday.

Track: Regular season finales arrive

It’s hard to believe, but the outdoor track and field regular season
comes to a close Friday when Falmouth, Greely and Yarmouth compete at
Cape Elizabeth and Freeport and NYA join Gray-New Gloucester at Poland.

Last week, the Yachtsmen boys and girls continued their undefeated
campaigns with wins at Fryeburg. NYA also took part. The boys came in
third and the girls were fourth. Greely was first in both genders at a
home meet which included Freeport (third on both the boys’ and girls’
sides). Yarmouth hosted Gray-New Gloucester, Seacoast Christian,
Waynflete and York and both Clippers teams came in fourth.

Tennis: Falmouth girls remain unbeatable

On the hardcourts, while the tennis singles tournament was getting
underway (please see story, page 15), team play continued to produce
victories.

The defending Class B state champion Falmouth girls made it eight
matches without a loss Friday in a 5-0 home win over Fryeburg. The
Yachtsmen boys are 7-2 and have won six straight after a 4-1 win at
Fryeburg last Friday.

Freeport’s girls are on a three-match win streak and are 4-3 on the
year. Freeport’s boys beat Lake Region 3-2 last week for their first win against eight defeats.

Greely’s boys took a 4-4 mark into Tuesday’s match at Lake Region
(too late for print). The girls fell to 1-7 after Monday’s 3-2 loss to
Cape Elizabeth.

NYA’s girls are 7-1. They faced a home Heal Points-rich showdown
with rival Waynflete Wednesday (too late for print). The Panthers boys
are 1-7.

Yarmouth’s powerhouse boys’ team ran into a buzzsaw from Waynflete
Friday and fell to 6-2 after a 5-0 loss. The Clippers girls lost to the
Flyers 4-1 Monday and are now 4-3 on the season.
