SCARBOROUGH — Norman E. Nichols 81, of Scarborough died June 7 at St. Andre Health Care in Biddeford.

Nichols was born in Cranston, R.I., on October 21, 1930, the son of Earl and Alice Heseltine Nichols. He graduated from East Providence High School in 1948. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in business from Roger Williams College. Nichols enlisted in the National Guard in 1948 and served until his honorable discharge in 1955.

He married Janice Parker in 1955 in Warwick, R.I.

Nichols started working as a mail boy for New England Telephone Company in 1948. He retired from the company as district manager in 1986.

Nichols was a congregant of the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, a member of Portland Rotary Club and the Telephone Pioneers. He also was an avid golfer and a member of Purpoodock Golf Club in Cape Elizabeth for more than 40 years. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling with his wife and, most of all, spending time with his family.

Nichols is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Janice Nichols; three children Sharon Monn and husband, Michael, of Falmouth, Steven Nichols and wife, Sally, of Marietta, Ga., and Susan Boland and husband, Michae,l of Griswold, Conn.; and grandchildren Lindsay, Hannah, Kevin, Abigail, Joseph and Heather.

A funeral service was held June 11 at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maine Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
