SOUTH PORTLAND — Residents interested in running for elected city offices may pick up nomination papers at City Hall, 25 Cottage Road.

City Council seats representing District 3 and District 4, and School Board seats from District 3, District 4 and District 5 are up for grabs in November. Each office carries a three-year term.  

District 3 is the area between Cape Elizabeth, Pleasandale, Lincoln and Evans streets, and Cottage Road, Boothby Avenue and Ocean Street. District 4 is the area between Main Street, Lincoln Street, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough. District 5 covers the west end from the Brick Hill area to the Maine Mall.  

Residents must collect at least 100 valid signatures and turn in their petitions at the city clerk’s office between Aug. 24 and Sept. 8 for their names to be placed on the Nov. 3 ballot. 

Councilors James Soule in District 3 and Maxine Beecher in District 4 said they will seek re-election, as did School Board member Michael Eastman in District 3. School Board Incumbents James Gilboy in District 4 and Stacy Gato in District 5 could not be reached for comment. 

Information about expectations of elected officials are posted on the city clerk’s link on the city’s Web site. The clerk’s office also suggests reading the city ordinance governing both the City Council and School Board.

School Board members receive an annual stipend of $1,000, while city councilors receive an annual stipend of $3,000 plus the option of enrolling in the city health-care plan.
