Egg-centric restaurant to open in Scarborough
SCARBOROUGH — A Colorado-based breakfast chain restaurant is coming to Scarborough. The Egg & I will open at 183 Route 1 by May. There are 51 The Egg & I restaurants in 10 states. The Scarborough location will be the first in Maine.
South Portland man sues Cumberland County district attorney, claims Anderson acted improperly in custody case
SOUTH PORTLAND — A man involved in a long-running child custody case is suing Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson in federal court. Igor Malenko claims Anderson's involvement in the dispute between him and his ex-wife, Washington, D.C., resident Lori Handrahan, was inappropriate and violated his civil rights. Malenko and Handrahan have been in a legal battle over their 5-year-old daughter for several years. At various turns, each has accused the other of physically and psychologically abusing the girl.

Corbett named police Officer of the Year in South Portland
SOUTH PORTLAND — An eye for detail and a thorough approach have earned Patrolman Scott Corbett the honor of Officer of the Year for the second time. Corbett's Police Department superiors chose him from a list including the other officers who had been named Officer of the Month in 2011. He received two paid days off, a pin to wear on his uniform and a commemorative plaque from the City Council. "He is a perfect example of the high-caliber personnel we have in the department," Police Chief Ed Googins said Wednesday. "It's a well-deserved award."
Cape Elizabeth councilors shelve some library recommendations
CAPE ELIZABETH — While agreeing the town needs an expanded and renovated Thomas Memorial Library, town councilors on Monday expressed different opinions about how and when to pitch the project to voters. The result of the workshop discussion will lead to a council vote Monday, Feb. 13, on five recommendations from Town Manager Michael McGovern and the Portland-based consulting firm of Demont Associates. The recommendations were culled from a list of seven suggested by McGovern last month.
South Portland chemical firm settles EPA claim with $68K fine
SOUTH PORTLAND — A Massachusetts company with a warehouse in South Portland has agreed to pay more than $68,000 in fines to the Environmental Protection Agency. Monson Cos. also will provide training and equipment worth nearly $33,000 to local emergency response teams, according to a statement from the EPA.
Scarborough library to showcase Russian literature
SCARBOROUGH — The spotlight at Scarborough Public Library this month goes to recently translated Russian literature. Bowdoin College Russian instructor Lisa Hayden Espenschade will present works of fiction and nonfiction at the library at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Espenschade received her master’s degree in Russian literature from the University of Pennsylvania and lived in Moscow from 1992-1998.
Fort Williams bus fees, tighter seasonal rental controls likely in Cape Elizabeth
CAPE ELIZABETH — Whether day-tripping or in town for a week, some visitors to Cape Elizabeth could find their stays slightly more expensive and possibly more regulated after the Feb. 13 Town Council meeting. On the agenda for the 7 p.m. meeting at Town Hall is the implementation of fees for tour bus and street-car operators at Fort Williams Park, and zoning regulations for short-term rental properties.
