Shirley V. Griffin, 89
FALMOUTH — Shirley V. Griffin, 89, died peacefully Dec. 15 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
On May 26, 1921, she was born in Portland, one of seven children of Cora Ames Pennell and Theopholis Pennell, and attended school in South Portland, graduating from South Portland High School.
For the past 69 years she lived in Falmouth and was active in the community. Over the years she served on the board of Falmouth Community Programs, helped raise funds for renovating the Pleasant Hill Fire Station, and served as the head of the Community Chest for 10 years. When her children were young she was involved in school activities and helped implement the hot lunch program at the Graves School.
She worked at Carolyn Caterers for many years and later on for the Boy Scouts of America until she retired.
After she retired, she enjoyed spending time in Florida with her sister and other family members.
Her three grandchildren, Scott, Shawn and Katie were the light of her life and she especially enjoyed supporting Scott and Shawn with their scouting badges, awards and adventures.
She was predeceased by her husband William F.Griffin Sr., a daughter Marlene P. Griffin, and a son-in-law, Everett S. Macmaster.
Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Ann Macmaster of Falmouth, and her son, William F. Griffin and his wife Kathy of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Scott Macmaster and his wife Catherine of Gray, Shawn Macmaster of Falmouth, and Katie Griffin of North Carolina; and a special great-grandchild, Colby, of North Carolina.
A graveside service will be held in the spring.
