Gertrude M. Beckwith, 82
YARMOUTH — Gertrude Marie (Hight) Beckwith died Dec. 17 after a brief bout with cancer.
Born in Portland on July 24, 1928, to Donald and Florence Hight. After the early death of her parents, she became a ward of Alvah and Annie Kent and attended North Yarmouth schools.
In 1948, she married Carlton Beckwith and moved to his farm. In 1952, they built their house in Yarmouth, now known as 17 Beckwith St.
The majority of her life was dedicated to working on the farm, finishing her last season this past October.
Her house was the coffee shop/snack bar for everyone on the farm, and for six decades, she baked her famous whoopie pies and other treats. She will be missed by many.
She was predeceased by her husband Carton E. Beckwith, a son, Richard A. Beckwith, and her brother, Donald G. Hight.
She is survived by her son, Donald E. Beckwith, and her daughter, Barbara A. Salmon, both of aYarmouth; two grandsons, Christopher A. and Alicia Beckwith and their children, Madeline P. and Grady R. of Windham, and Nicholas J. Salmon; two granddaughters, April L. and Sam Whitener of Portland, and Stephanie M. Salmon and fiance Nick Hutchins of Gray.
The family will have a private celebration on the farm in the spring.
