Marjorie G. Lowell, 79: Enjoyed camping, eating out

PORTLAND — Marjorie Gertrude “Nanny” Lowell, 79, of Freeport, died Dec. 23 in Portland after a period of declining health.

Born in Portland on April 5, 1931, she was a daughter of Marion B. (Pearson) and Charles T. Miller and graduated from South Portland High School in 1949.

On April 30, 1954, she married Robert A. Lowell and together they had three children.

A devoted homemaker all of her life, she also worked as a telephone operator for AT&T in Portland, a sales associate for Porteous, Mitchell and Braun in Portland, and as a bookkeeper for the family business, Lowell Oil Company in Freeport.

She was a member of First Parish Church Congregational in Freeport.

She enjoyed family gatherings, camping trips to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and was known for her homemade Christmas candy.

Her husband predeceased her in 2001, as well as her sister, Dorothy Smith, and five brothers, Lewis, Charles, Edward, Ralph and Howard Miller.

Survivors include her three children, Eric D. Lowell, Robin A. Lowell and his wife Janet Fillmore, and Susan L. Hawkes and her partner Brian E. Oliver; her seven grandchildren, Heather Kristan, Neil I. Lowell and his wife Suzanne, Erica D. Lowell, Ryan A. Lowell and his wife Melissa, Tyler F. Lowell, Autumn R. Hawkes, Sarah E. Hawkes; her great-grandson, Riley A. Lowell; her brother, Herbert Miller and his wife Lorraine; her sisters-in-law, Virginia Lowell, Rita Miller and Ollie Miller; her brother-in-law Thomas Lowell and his wife Lucinda; many nieces and nephews; and special friend Karen Erskine.

Memorial services were held Dec. 29.
