THE PLAYOFFS Brunswick, Mt. Ararat girls eliminated from tournament

Both the Brunswick and Mt. Ararat's girls' basketball teams made it to the Augusta Civic Center for the Eastern Class A quarterfinal round, but neither team managed to stay any longer.
Brunswick, the No. 4 seed in the region, coming off a 14-4 regular season, met its match in No. 5 Oxford Hills,
Brunswick opened the season with a 36-33 win at Oxford Hills. On Jan. 8, the Dragons lost 52-42 at home to the defending regional champion Vikings.
The Vikings are the team in the Eastern A tournament with the most experience on the Augusta Civic Center court and came out strong to take the early lead. Oxford Hills had the advantage to as many as eight in the second quarter. They then used an 11-0 run to start the third to put things away en route to a 46-31 victory.
Senior standout Claire Baecher finished with 18 points, but nobody else produced much for Brunswick. The Dragons shot just 12-for-45 from the floor and had 16 turnovers, including a half dozen in the first and third quarters.
Brunswick finished 14-5.
Mt. Ararat went 8-10 during the regular year to earn the No. 10 seed, then upset host No. 7 Cony in the preliminary round, 45-42, to set up a date with No. 2 Edward Little in the quarterfinals. The Eagles lost twice to the Red Eddies during the regular year and the third time wouldn't prove to be a charm.
The teams were tied at 11-11 after one period. Mt. Ararat was done in by seven turnovers in the early going. The Eagles took a 21-18 lead into the break, but Edward Little went on top by a point after three, 28-27.
In the fourth, the Red Eddies seized control, going on a 20-1 run to ice a 48-28 victory, which ended Mt. Ararat's season at 9-11.
