Margaret A. Butkus, 86: Enjoyed traveling, time with grandchildren

PORTLAND — Margaret Ann Butkus, 86, died Sept. 9 at Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.

On July 3, 1924, she was born in Biddeford, the daughter of Bertrand Knapp and Anne M. Hennessey Connolly Knapp, and attended Portland schools.

During World War II she worked at the South Portland Shipyard where Liberty Ships were built.

She married Stanley J. Butkus Jr., in Portland, and lived on Peaks Island, where they enjoyed island life and raised their family.

She loved a good party and especially enjoyed the island beaches and the backshore cookouts.

Over the years she enjoyed many adventures, from cruising the Caribbean to touring France, Germany, Ireland and Portugal.

Her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a longtime communicant of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church on Peaks Island and an active participant at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for many years.

Her husband Stanley predeceased her on March 17, 1985.

She is survived by three children, her daughter Joann and her husband Robert Giampetruzzi of Portland, and two sons, Stanley J. and his wife Teresa Butkus of Columbia, S.C., and Stephen B. and his wife Carol Butkus of Smithfield, Va.; five grandchildren, Monica Hennessey, Mark Butkus, Josef Butkus, Abigail Butkus, Nicholas Giampetruzzi; and four great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland.
