Hazel Libby, 79
TOPSHAM — Hazel Libby, 79, died Aug. 18 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born Jan. 12, 1931, the youngest child of Bird and Agnes Shellenbarger.
At age 16, her future husband, Henry Libby, moved to the family home to work as a farmhand. They married on May 12, 1951, raised six children, and remained sweethearts throughout their 58-year marriage.
She worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson’s and later as a hostess at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant for over 20 years.
Her hobbies included hunting, camping, oil painting, berry picking and most of all, her time in the pool with her grandchildren.
Her husband Henry took care of her until November 1998, when their daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Roy Wallace, rearranged their home and lives to keep them together until his death in 2009.
Thanks to the help of Jon, Natasha, Sam, and Carly, she was able to remain at home on the Shellenbarger farm until her death.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry, a son, Norman Libby, three sisters, Catherine Upham, Ruth Chamberland, Anne Savage, and her brother, John Shellenbarger.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, Roy and Julie Wallace, Leon and Barbara Libby, David Libby, Peter and Lorraine Darling, Michael and Celina Coffey; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Memorial donations can be made to Hospice Care CHANS, 60 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.
