Richard M. McGarrigle, 85

BRUNSWICK — The Rev. Richard Michael McGarrigle, 85, died July 23 in Brunswick after a brief illness.

On  Oct. 9, 1924, he was born in Calais, a son of John Philip Sr., and Dora Mildred McGarrigle,  and attended local Catholic schools.

After graduating from St. Thomas College in Chatham, N.B., he entered St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md.

On June 11, 1949, he was ordained  and received his first assignment as parochial vicar at Holy Name Church in Machias.

He had various parish assignments throughout Maine before becoming the founding pastor of St. Bartholomew's Church in Cape Elizabeth in 1968.

In 1975 he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Portland for two years until he was transferred to St. Mary's Parish in Bath, where he remained until he retired in 1994.

After he retired from full-time ministry, he continued to provide ministry as a retired priest for many years.

Over the years he served on numerous diocesan boards and committees, including the Diocesan Ecumenical Commission and Sagadahoc Council of the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Sebec Lake.

He was predeceased by his brother, John P. McGarrigle, Jr. , sister-in-law Elsie, and their son Richard.

Surviving are two sisters, Doreen Hill and Marie McGarrigle, both of Calais;  special family member Peggy Sullivan of Brunswick; nieces and nephews, Rita (Hill) Yardley and her husband Shawn and their children; John Hill and his daughters ; Michael Hill and his wife Debbie and their daughters; Diane (McGarrigle) Hunnewell and her husband Avery.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.
