Beverly A. Rutherford, 76: Antiques dealer, enjoyed singing with family, friends

SOUTH PORTLAND — Beverly Anna Rutherford, 76, died at home July 16.

On Sept. 18, 1933, she was born in Portland, the only child of Howard Leroy and Erma Muriel Jones Smith.

She grew up on Munjoy Hill and graduated from Portland High School.

On Sept. 13, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Floyd “Red” Rutherford, and was happy to join the large and lively Rutherford family.

After getting married, they moved to Houston, Texas, while Red attended the University of Houston.

As proprietor of Grandma’s Attic and the Village General Store, she became well-known in the antiques and collectibles community, especially for her expertise in antique lace and linen.

She was dearly loved by family and friends, and was always sharing food and welcoming anyone for a summer swim. Every Christmas at her house was filled with caroling, great food and love.

She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Red.

Surviving are seven children Floyd, Maryjane, Beth, L. Anna "Leslie," Howard, Martha and Patty, and their spouses; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
