Bath society seeks former campers for 65th anniversary celebration

BATH — The Pine Tree Society is celebrating 65 years of its summer camp for disabled Mainers and is looking for former campers and staffers to take part in the Sunday, Aug. 8, reunion.

Pine Tree Camp, on North Pond in Rome, opened on July 2, 1945 to 75 Maine children with physical disabilities. During their eight-week stay, the youths participated in regular summer camp activities while also receiving intense therapy.

The camp has since broadened its scope to serve adults.

“Pine Tree Camp has served thousands of campers and impacted the lives of thousands of staff members dating back to 1945,” Pine Tree Society Executive Director Anne Marsh said. “Unfortunately, over the years, we have lost touch with our alumni. They are all important members of the Pine Tree Camp family and this anniversary gives us a great opportunity to reconnect with them.”

The 285-acre facility now hosts 650 children and adults. Each group of campers experiences six days of activities that include fishing, swimming, hiking, kayaking, drama, adaptive tennis and arts and crafts. A full medical staff is available around the clock.

The reunion will be held at the camp from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 8. Alumni can submit information through an online form that will be added to a directory, and at the same time they can RSVP for the event. Log onto pinetreesociety.org or call 443-3341 for more information.
