Art sought for new Falmouth Elementary School building

FALMOUTH — The Maine Arts Commission is calling for artist proposals for pieces to be installed in the new Falmouth Elementary School when it is completed next summer.

The project is part of the Percent For Art program, which requires that all state-funded building projects set aside 1 percent of the construction funds for the purchase of art for the building. For Falmouth Elementary School, this means $50,000 is available to fund the project.

A five-person committee, including art teachers from the school and community members, will judge the proposals and determine which works of art are the best fit for the school. The committee will review the proposals and call for a second round of renderings. Artists will be paid a design fee of $1,000 for the second-round proposals, and will present their final proposals to the committee in person.

The Maine Arts Commission and the committee have offered suggestions to interested artists, including focusing on Falmouth's future, rather than the past, and creating something that fits into the unique design of the building. However, the committee has put no limitations on the topic or material the works should encompass.

Areas under consideration for the art works to be displayed are the front atrium and "green roof" feature between the outdoor botanical classroom and the large windows that look into the atrium.

The funds for the project will be awarded to one artist or a team of artists working together. The budget proposal should cover all design, fabrication, transportation, documentation, and installation expenses.

The deadline for proposals is June 1 at 5 p.m. Those interested should contact Sarah Smith at ssmith@oakpoint.com or Allison Ferris at the Maine Arts Commission at 287-2724.
