South Portland hockey honored
After arguably the finest season in its history, the South Portland hockey team honored several players at a recent annual end-of-season "brunch-quet."
The Jeff King "7th Player" award was given to Neil Maietta.
The Scholar Athlete award went to Brittany Harrison.
The Harry Clark Award for fewest penalty minutes went to D.J. Conley.
The Coach's Most Valuable Player was Zach Horton.
Tommy Ellis was an All-State honorable mention and a member of the All-Academic team.
Joe Robinson was named the Coach of the Year by his peers.
The Red Riots overcame a 1-3 start to post a 14-4 record, good for the No. 4 seed in Western Class A. South Portland then won a quarterfinal game for the first time ever, rallying past No. 5 Portland, 3-2. The season ended at 15-5 with a 7-2 loss to eventual state champion Biddeford in the semifinals.
