Winter sports stars earn their due

Mid-Coast winter sports athletes took fans on a three-month ride of excitement and triumph. As expected, an abundance of Dragons, Eagles and Shipbuilders have been named to postseason all-star teams. Here's a full accounting:

Boys' basketball

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference south first team included Brunswick's Rashon Edgerton. Brunswick's Stephen Carter and Mitchell Black, along with Morse's Alonzo James and Will Gerencer of Mt. Ararat made the second team.

Morse's Michael Walton and Mt. Ararat's Gerencer qualified for the KVAC All-Academic team.

Brunswick's Todd Hanson was named the Coach of the Year.

On the state level, Brunswick's Edgerton and Morse's James were named to the Class A/B East team for the Maine McDonald's Senior All-Star Game. James scored 23 points and Edgerton had 12 in a 103-88 loss to the West.

Morse's Walton qualified for the boys' All-State All-Academic team.

Girls' basketball

On the girls' side, the KVAC south first team included Morse's Sarah Fitzgerald and Mt. Ararat's Hannah Fenwick.

Brunswick's Lydia Caputi and Jacki Kelly, Morse's Tarra Burr and Mt. Ararat's Tess Hitchcock were named to the second team.

Brunswick's Eliza Halmo, Morse's Fitzgerald, Meagan Hennessey and Hannah Roy qualified for the KVAC All-Academic team.

Morse's Mike Hart was chosen Coach of the Year.

At the state level, Morse's Fitzgerald and Mt. Ararat's Fenwick played on the Class A/B East squad in the Maine McDonald's Senior All-Star Game. The East lost, 62-58.

Fenwick was a semifinalist for the Miss Maine Basketball award, which ultimately went to Scarborough's Christy Manning.

Hockey

On the ice this season, Brunswick senior forward Conor Kelly and senior defenseman Cody Smith made the All-State East first team.

Brunswick's Carl Sickel was an honorable mention.

Brunswick's Kelly qualified for the All-Academic team.

Brunswick's Kelly and Smith were also Senior All-Stars.

On the girls' side, Brunswick senior goalie Amanda Heller made the All-East first team.

Brunswick sophomore defender Suzannah Smith was an honorable mention.

Indoor track

The KVAC indoor track and field all-star team had plenty of local representation.

Brunswick's Michael Ballback, Don Benbow, Liam Cassidy, Kenzell Crawford, Will Geoghegan, Matt Hatke, Patrick Horan, Steve Purcell, Brandon Sawyer, Mike Slovenski and Dylan Walton and Mt. Ararat's Tim Bickford, Mckenzie Gary, Will Himak, Nathan Jackson, Brent Kramer, Ryan Smith and Alden Talbot made the boys' squad.

Brunswick's Geoghegan was named Athlete of the KVAC Meet.

Brunswick's Dan Dearing was named boys' Coach of the Year.

Brunswick's Cassidy, Gaetan Davis, Geoghegan, Winthrop Gillis, Daniel Pavitt and Matt Worthington and Mt. Ararat's Daniel Van Note qualified for the All-Academic team.

On the girls' side, Brunswick's Jasmine Boyle, Irina DeForest, Alexis Dickinson, Allison Hill, Bridget Horan, Kyia Jensen, Kathleen McMahon and Farren Welzel and Mt. Ararat's Chloe Emerson, Katrina Gelwick, Jess Leeman, Randi London, Mikaela Melcher, Haley Michaud, Ellen Pinnette, Maddison Prescott and Carrie Smith made the girls' team.

Brunswick's McMahon was named Athlete of the KVAC Meet.

Brunswick's Dave Delois was chosen as the girls' Coach of the Year.

Brunswick's Meghan Clark and Erica Noe and Mt. Ararat's Kristina Johnson, Pinnette and Danielle Smith qualified for the All-Academic team.

Swimming

The KVAC all-conference team had its share of local stars.

The boys' first team included Brunswick's Joe Blair, Tim Blair, Dan Jacques, Derek Nesbitt and James Wilgus, Morse's Ryan Banger, Jake Olsen, Aaron Valentine, Albin Werwaiss and James Wells and Mt. Ararat's Peter Burtt.

Wells was named the Male Swimmer of the Meet.

Brunswick's Simon Tracy, Morse's Keifer Boguhn, Kean McDermott, Valentine and Wells qualified for the All-Academic team.

On the girls' side, Brunswick's Kayla Purinton and Jessica Russell, Morse's Cassandra Bonnett, Rebecca Bonnett, Emily Buczkowski, Caitlin Foster, Catie Luedee, Morgan McDonough and Guerin Morrissete and Mt. Ararat's Celia Ouellette and Kendra Skelton were honored as all-stars.

The female All-Academic team included Brunswick's Elly Brown, Chelsea Bruno, Cassie Ditzel and Anna Holmblad, Morse's Emily Bell-Hoerth, Rebecca Bonnett and Mallory Plummer and Mt. Ararat's Evelyn Dickinson.

The All-State teams had similar names.

The boys' first team included Hyde's Won Ho Chang (100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay) and Morse's James Wells (50 free, 100 backstroke and medley and 200 free relays).

Ho Chang was a second teamer in the 50 free.

On the girls' side, Brunswick's Jessica Russell (100 backstroke and medley relay) and Morse's Emily Buczkowski (200 and 400 free relays) were first teamers.

Russell (200 free and 400 free relay) and Buczkowski (50 free and 100 free) made the second team.

Morse's Wells was chosen as the Class A Male Swimmer of the Year.

Brunswick's Purinton was named Class A Female Diver of the Year.

Morse's Todd Marco was named Class A Girls' Coach of the Year.

Skiing

The KVAC skiing all-conference girls' first team included Mt. Ararat's Linnea Tilberg and Emma Wood.

Mt. Ararat's Benjamin Grotton, Morgan Kinney and Tilberg qualified for the All-Academic team.

Wrestling

The KVAC wrestling all-star first team included Morse's J. Cavanagh (215 pounds) and Mt. Ararat's Henry Chandler (285).

Brunswick's Jared Jensen (119), Morse's Wyatt Brackett (125), Zach Kidney (285), Sean Marrero (171), Tyler Russell (189) and Gary Stevens (103) and Mt. Ararat's Justin Ciciotte (135), Joseph Rinaldi (145) and Derek True (152) were second teamers.

Brunswick's Connor McGowan and Morse's Cavanagh and Russell qualified for the All-Academic team.
