SOUTH PORTLAND — Wilbur T. Wildes, Jr., 78, died Feb. 21 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. 

Born at home in South Portland on Dec. 23, 1931, he was a son of Wilbur T. and Doris (Brown) Wildes, Sr. He attended Portland and South Portland schools, graduating from South Portland High School.

On Nov. 11, 1950, he married Barbara Stinnett.

For 53 years he was employed at the J.J. Nissen Bakery, eventually retiring as a district sales manager.

A generous man who volunteered his time as a baseball coach for Little League and the Babe Ruth League, he truly loved playing and watching all sports. 

In the mid 70s he and a group of his friends walked to Fenway Park from South Portland, meeting Ted Williams at the pitcher’s mound to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. 

He was a past member of the Elks and a former president of the Sunset Park Men’s Club.

He was predeceased by a brother, Herbert “Bud” Wildes, and a grandson, Jesse.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Barbara Wildes of South Portland; his four children, W. Timothy Wildes, III and wife Jackie of Bridgton, Michael J. Wildes of South Portland, Julie A. Wildes of Portland, Peter J. Wildes and wife Stephanie Pandora of South Portland; six grandchildren, Timothy, Aaron, Holly, Whitney, Jade, Anna Louise;  great-granddaughter Julie; sister Marion Chase; his good friends Ben Dionne and Terry Clifford; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
