February push begins for Mid-Coast teams

The frenetic and fun month of February is upon us and all winter sports are about to take center stage. Swimming, track and wrestling begin their postseasons this weekend. The basketball tournament begins a week from Friday.

Here's where local teams stand as the calendar turns:

Boys' basketball

The Brunswick boys' basketball team is jockeying for playoff positioning. The Dragons entered the week with a 15-1 mark, good for fifth in a hotly contested Eastern Class A race. Brunswick was a 60-47 home winner over Lewiston last Thursday. The Dragons were home with Cony Tuesday and at Morse Thursday to close the regular season. There's a good chance Brunswick could meet Bangor in what would be a delicious quarterfinal round tournament matchup.

Mt. Ararat was 7-9 and ninth in the 15-team field entering the week. Only the top eight teams qualify for the postseason and it appeared the Eagles would fall short. Last week, Mt. Ararat won 51-37 at home over Erskine and 53-43 at Lewiston. The Eagles hosted Edward Little Tuesday and closed at home against Oxford Hills Thursday.

Morse entered the week 3-13 and 11th in the standings after winning 57-52 at home over Cony and falling 68-38 at Edward Little last week. The Shipbuilders went to Erskine Tuesday and played out the string at Brunswick Thursday.

In Western D, Hyde's in good shape. The Phoenix were up to fifth in the Heals with a 10-3 mark after winning three times last week: 62-26 over visiting Sacopee, 47-38 at Valley and 56-49 at Waynflete. Hyde closed out the regular year Thursday at Old Orchard Beach.

Girls' basketball

On the girls' side, all three local Eastern A squads are tournament-bound.

Brunswick entered the week third in the Heals with a 12-4 mark after last Tuesday's 71-39 romp at Lewiston. The Dragons were at Cony Tuesday and closed the regular year at home versus Morse Thursday.

The Shipbuilders entered the week 12-4 and fifth in the standings. Morse rolled 43-23 over visiting Cony and downed visiting Edward Little 48-40 last week. Morse hosted Erskine Tuesday and played at Brunswick Thursday to close out the regular season.

Mt. Ararat was in the fourth spot with a 10-6 mark after winning 56-42 at Erskine and 63-31 at home over Lewiston last week. The Eagles played at Edward Little Tuesday and closed at Oxford Hills Thursday.

In Western D, Hyde's season has come to a close. The Phoenix were 11th in the latest standings and took a 2-11 mark into their finale Thursday at Old Orchard Beach. Last week, Hyde lost 29-22 to Sacopee and 57-37 to Waynflete, but defeated Valley 43-39 for its second victory.

Hockey

On the ice, the girls' season has come to a close. Brunswick wound up 3-14-1 and seventh in the seven-team East Region. The Dragons won't compete in the playoffs. Brunswick lost 4-1 to Leavitt and 7-2 to Winslow in its final two games.

The Brunswick boys are still hopeful about the postseason. The Dragons are currently eighth in Eastern A, but only seven teams qualify. Brunswick dropped a 5-4 decision at Maranacook Monday. The Dragons looked to rebound Thursday at Cheverus. Saturday, Brunswick hosts Bangor.

Mt. Ararat took a 2-12 mark and the No. 12 spot in the standings into Thursday's home game with Messalonskee. Last week, the Eagles fell 5-0 at Skowhegan. Tuesday of next week, Mt. Ararat hosts Sanford.

Track

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference indoor track championship meet is Saturday at Bowdoin. Brunswick and Mt. Ararat were first and second respectively in both genders at last weekend's league meet which also included Cony, Edward Little, Lewiston and Maranacook.

Swimming

The KVAC swimming championships are also Saturday at the Bath YMCA.

Wrestling

Morse and Mt. Ararat took part in last weekend's KVAC wrestling championship meet. The Shipbuilders came in second and the Eagles were fifth. Morse's J. Cavanagh (215) and Mt. Ararat's Henry Chandler (285) were individual champs. The Eastern A wrestling regionals are Saturday at Westbrook High School.
