New fitness studio
opens in Falmouth

FALMOUTH - The Balanced Body Fitness Studio recently held its grand opening celebration at its location in West Falmouth, in the Portland North Business Park, 60 Gray Road, Unit 11.

The new studio, with state-of-the-art aerobic flooring, is owned by Peggy Hilfrank of Falmouth, a nationally certified fitness instructor.  Daily classes  in Zumba, yoga, Pilates, boot camp and more are available by drop-in or by pre-purchased discount punch cards.

Common Good grants
open to local nonprofts

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College student group, the Common Good Grant Committee, is currently accepting proposals from community organizations for this year's Common Good Grant.
 
The Common Good Grant of up to $2,500 is available to local non-profits serving the greater Brunswick community, including the towns of Brunswick, Harpswell, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Freeport, Topsham, Bath, Bowdoinham, Woolwich, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls, Bowdoin and Yarmouth.

Grant proposals should be sent to the Common Good Grant Committee, McKeen Center for the Common Good, and be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 5, 2010.  All applicants will be notified of funding decisions on or before Monday, April 5.

Grants are intended to maintain current programs and/or fund new initiatives that serve local communities. The grant is for use between April 14, 2010 and April 14, 2011.
 
Last year's grant recipients were Bath Elementary PTA, Compass Project, Maine Housing and Building Materials Exchange, Merrymeeting AIDS Support Services, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, and Tri-County Literacy Volunteers.

Governor appoints,
nominates new positions

AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci recently announced several nominations and reappointments for governmental boards.

Thaxter Trafton has been nominated as commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development. Since Nov. 16 he has served as acting Commissioner.

Four new members were appointed to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority board of directors: Rita Armstrong of Freeport, Sally DelGreco of Brunswick, Sande Updegraph of Brunswick and Steven Weems of Brunswick.

Charles Spies III of Topsham was nominated for reappointment to the MRRA board.

James Cloutier of Portland was nominated to the Maine Turnpike Authority board of directors.

All nominations must be approved by the committee of oversight and confirmed by the Senate.

New Hires, Promotions

The Wellness Solution in Falmouth has hired licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbal practitioner Abigail Lopez, LAc. She is accepting new patients for her general practice with a focus on full family health, and specializes in women’s healthcare and orthopedic injuries.

Bowdoin College has named Scott A. Meiklejohn of Harpswell as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid.

Four attorneys have joined the Portland office of the law firm of Verrill Dana as associates; Benjamin E. Ford, Nathaniel R. Hull, Kyle T. MacDonald and Misti D. Munster.

Mike Denning of Yarmouth has joined The Mortgage Office on U.S. Route One in Yarmouth.

Jeff Bland of Windham has joined Martin’s Point Health Care as vice president of delivery system operations, responsible for the management of all Martin’s Point nine regional affiliated health care centers.

Toby Dilworth of Yarmouth has returned to Portland law firm Drummond Woodsum as a member of the trial services group after serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for 14 years.

Instrumentation manufacturer Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc. of Yarmouth has hired four new employees, including Tom Parker of Lisbon Falls, manufacturing production assistant; Andrew Leigh of Freeport, electronics technician; Josh Geib of Wiscasset, industrial sales; and Matt Duplisea of Gorham, manager of engineering.

Linda Additon of Scarborough has joined TD Insurance, Inc. in South Portland as an account manager in employee benefits.

Sally A. Morris has been hired as counsel to the Portland office of Fisher & Phillips LLP.

Foundations Real Estate in Yarmouth has been joined by real estate agent Patty Sanville of Durham.

VNA Home Health & Hospice has hired Dr. Elizabeth White as medical director of its Palliative Care and Hospice Programs at Mercy Hospital and VNA Home Health & Hospice.

The South Portland branch of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution has promoted Melanie Lee of Saco to branch manager.

Freeport Physical Therapy, P.A. has hired Freeport resident Gary Sylvester, M.S., P.T., as a staff physical therapist.

Deborah Miller, RN, CRNI, was recently named the new director of resident care services at OceanView at Falmouth.

Consigli Construction Co., Inc. in Portland has hired Kathryn Lamb of Portland as a project manager, working with teams focused on healthcare projects throughout the region.

KeyBank has named Joe Manning of Westbrook as assistant vice president and manager of the Maine District’s Scarborough branch.
