Walter R. Brooks, 65: Avid hunter, enjoyed time with family, friends
DURHAM — Walter R. Brooks, 65, formerly of Brunswick, died Sept. 16 at home after a long illness, with family at his side.
He was born in Brunswick on Dec. 30, 1943, a son of Harry R. and Edna (Bragdon) Brooks.
After graduating from Brunswick High School in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War.
On Oct. 23, 1965, he married Ruth A. Field.
For 25 years, he worked at Bath Iron Works until he retired in 1998.
He was a coach for Babe Ruth Baseball, a Cub Scout Leader for Pack 648 and volunteered with the Brunswick Fire Department. He was also a member of the Topsham American Legion Post 202.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Maine Trapping Association. He enjoyed time with his hunting buddies and looked forward to meeting every year at Thanksgiving at "Johnnies Bucket."
After his retirement, he would spend time at Danny's on the mall, enjoying their chili dogs and meeting with old friends.
Surviving are his wife Ruth; four sons, Rick of Durham, Ron and his wife Amy of Bowdoin, Randy and his wife Renee of Freeport, and Rob and his companion Deb of Durham; two brothers, Alden of Alna and Bill of Brunswick and a sister, Dawn Noonan of Dennysville; a very dear aunt, Leila Fournier of Freeport; four grandsons and two granddaughters; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held last week.
