Helen F. Lowell, 84: Longtime community volunteer

CAPE ELIZABETH — Helen Fifield Lowell, 84, died Sept. 5 at Cedars Nursing Home.

Born in Portland on July 5, 1925, she was the daughter of Alvin R. and Glenda L. Lowell Fifield.

After she graduated from Portland High School in 1944, she made floral arrangements for Vose Smith Florist in Portland.

During World War II, she volunteered for the U.S. Air Force as an airplane tracker over greater Portland.

For 25 years she was employed by Associated Hospital Services of Maine.

She was generous with her time, volunteering for Community Health Services, as a Girl Scout Leader, and helping elderly friends by chauffeuring and providing meals in their final years. A passion for animal causes, she provided a home for stray cats and homeless dogs.

Her talents included braided rug-making, knitting, sewing and cooking.

She found joy from her flower and vegetable gardens and long weekends with friends going for rides along the Maine Coast.

She was predeceased by her husband of thirty years, Richard M. Lowell, and by two brothers, Warren and Stephen.

Surviving are nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Westbrook Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater St., Westbrook, ME 04098; the American Heart Association; Cape Elizabeth Fire and Rescue or the American Cancer Fund.

Memorial services were held last week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
