Raymond E. Jacobson, 74
CUMBERLAND — Raymond Edwin Jacobson, 74, died Sept. 11 at home with family by his side.
On March 25, 1935, he was born in Worcester, Mass., a son of Helga (Nystrom) and Gustaf Jacobson.
In 1954, he graduated from Millbury High School. While in high school, he excelled at basketball, baseball and football. On Nov. 25, 1995, he was in the first induction class of the Millbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
After attending Springfield College, he spent two years in the U.S. Army.
He married Audrey Alsop and together they had four children.
Over 35 years ago, they moved to Maine for a job opportunity and made their home in an old Cumberland farm.
He was a natural athlete and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and throwing horseshoes. His interests included playing cribbage and gardening, and he was a die-hard New England sports fan, especially of the Red Sox.
A 6-foot-6-inch "gentle giant," he will be remembered for his honesty, fairness, kindness and warm smile.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Audrey Jacobson of Cumberland; his four children, Kimberlyanne Cleaves and her husband Rich of Augusta, Scott Raymond Jacobson and his wife Tove of Cumberland, Pamela Rae Perry and her husband John of Freeport, Christian Gustaf Jacobson and his wife Amy of Cumberland; his 10 grandchildren, Savannah Rae, Cassandra Richelle, Jared Matthew, Danielle Christine, Svenn Gustav, Jacobson Isaac, Carter Jacobson, Susannah Georgianna, Adam Douglas, Abigail Christine-Annie; his great-grandsons: Chase Alen Paul and Brady Richard; his brother Richard Allen Jacobson and sister Elaine Hayden, both of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19 at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
