Letter: Beem needs a time-out
Unlike Mr. Beem seems to believe, you don't have to be "educated" to understand where our country is headed. You just have to have common sense. I found Mr. Beem's article to be full of hate and discontent. He would do better to tone down his language, as he would have more of a chance of persuading people. As it is now, he just appears to be an elite leftist who is not connected to common sense and who is without an open, discerning mind.

Actually, all I wrote is that I disagree vehemently with Beth O'Connor and Glenn Beck. I never said a word about denying them the right to be wrong. Sure, like millions of good Americans, I wish conservative talk radio and the rabid rightwing would just dry up and blow away, but until it does, I reserve the right to criticize them.
I have to admit, I usually by-pass Mr. Beem's column because I don't care for his style of self-importance that seems to be conveyed in his opinions. I generally reserve his section for the ferret cage (I like to recycle).
However, his vehement attack on the "Berwick waitress" raised my blood pressure a few notches. I did happen to read the open letter as my husband had printed it out and it was on the desk the other day. There was no heading on it and at first I thought he had written it, as most of the issues covered, he has spoken about. I thought it was well written and in general, conveyed an opinion I have heard from many people.
I did not vote for Mr. Obabma, but I have wished him well. Change in Washington has been needed for a very long time. But, I am very concerned however, about the direction that we are being led in. The big business that is too big to fail is garbage! If it cannot manage its business to run properly, it should fail. The government has no "business" owning any part of private enterprise or industry. It shouldn't own GM and It should stay out of health care.
Government can be cost effective and it can be efficient. It has NEVER been both. By all means, reform insurance practice so that medicine is between the doctor and patient, but Congress should not become the insurer. Look how well Medicare has fared. Can you honestly say you want more of that?
I am concerned that our elected representatives are not having the time to read the bills that are being rushed in to vote. I am concerned that "czars" are being appointed to oversee factions of industry and that these people have no experience or education in the field. Who do these people report to? I'll give you a hint... it's not the taxpayer, or the board of directors, or even congress...Why would you do that? The only reason that comes to my mind is "favor payback time". This has all the earmarks of corruption. If it looks like the sewer, and smells like the sewer, let's pray that it's not our water supply!
My grandmother told me a very long time ago, "that you are known by the company you keep"... I don't believe that I have ever heard a more perfect truism that describes what we are witnessing right now.
I am afraid. Very, very afraid... When the voters voted for change, I don't think this is what they had in mind....it sure wasn't what I had in mind...
Dear Down East Mom, The stink of corruption you're smelling may well come from all the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats in Congress who accepted vast sums from the health-care and insurance industries and are now trying to make sure that the status quo is maintained.

Actually, the stink of corruption you're smelling is most definitely coming from the partisans and those who follow an ideology without ever giving it deep thought. And it appears to be wafting off of Mister Beem.
I happened upon this "blog" by accident and will be erasing it from my history. What a chilling example of those who would pretend to defend democracy while accepting that he has freedom of speech as well as the throne upon which to sit as he decides who will be excluded from that God-given right.
