RSU 5 superintendent won't start until September

FREEPORT — Regional School Unit 5 is extending the contracts of co-interim Superintendents William Michaud and Michael LaFortune until their permanent replacement takes over in September.

The School Board on Feb. 25 selected Edward McDonough for the permanent job, but he can't start until Sept. 1 because of his current contract with the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, schools.

Michaud and LaFortune, who started as co-interim superintendents on July 1, 2014, were supposed to step down on June 30. Now Michaud will stay on from July 1-15 and LaFortune will take over from July 16-Aug. 31. Throughout August, McDonough will work as a general administrator to learn about the district, but LaFortune will be running the schools.
