Portland man charged with manslaughter, OUI in Bowdoinham fatal crash

PORTLAND — A 27-year-old Portland man who was driving a car when it crashed in Bowdoinham 10 days ago, killing his passenger, has been charged with drunken driving and manslaughter, Maine State Police said Wednesday. 

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a press release that Matthew Doucette had been drinking in the Old Port on the night of the crash that killed 25-year-old Rachel Mooney of Brunswick. Doucette allegedly had a blood alcohol level 0.15 percent, McCausland said, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Troopers said Doucette's 1997 Subaru was travelling at a speed of 100 mph on July 12 when it went off the Bowdoinham exit ramp on Interstate 295 at around 11:30 p.m. and struck several trees.

Mooney was transported by a Lifeflight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she died in the early morning hours of July 13.

McCausland said Doucette, who was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Mid-Coast Hospital in Brunswick, turned himself in Saturday morning to the Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset, where he was charged with aggravated operating under the influence and manslaughter. He is now free on $2,500 bail.
