Richard J. Mullen Jr., 45
SOUTH PORTLAND — Richard J. Mullen Jr., 45, died unexpectedly Aug. 1, while undergoing cardiac surgery.
Mullen was born Aug. 17, 1968, with a congenital heart defect that required two previous surgeries during his teenage years. Yet he did not allow his condition to hold him back. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1987, and then followed in his father’s footsteps to pursue an automotive career, advancing to the level of a BMW Certified Technician. Although his health recently had prevented him from working, he remained true to his love of cars through shows and drag racing.
Mullen lived for his friends and family, especially his two children, Ryan and Nicole, and his two dogs Phoebe and Jasper (“Jappy”). Despite some initial concerns, his family supported his decision to become the proud owner of a 1999 Camaro Z28 "Street & Strip" muscle car.
The family would like to express their special thanks to Dr. Quinn at Maine Medical Center.
Mullen is survived by his parents, Faye and Richard J. Mullen Sr., of South Portland; sister, Pamela Miller, and husband, Glenn Miller, of South Portland; sister, Christine Nickerson, of South Portland; sister, Gail Mullen-Atwood, of Saco; his son, Ryan Allen Mullen, and fiancé, Kayla Holman, of Standish; daughter, Nicole Faith Mullen, of Parsonsfield; grandson, Christopher Michael James Mullen; an uncle, Robert Myrick, and wife, Linda Myrick, of New Hampshire; along with several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Aug. 6 at Hobbs Funeral Home in South Portland, with interment at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Cardiology Department, at Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.
