BATH — Robert James Kaler Sr., 88, of Bath, died July 27 at Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick.

He was born in Bath on Dec. 22, 1925, the son of Howard E. and Dorothy (Travis) Kaler. He grew up in Bath and attended Morse High School.

Kaler served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II. He married Dorothy E. Brann on Oct. 16, 1943, and the couple resided in Bath to raise their family.

In 1956, after becoming a master oil burner technician, he proudly established Kaler Oil Co. Inc. He ran his company with love and devotion, always treating his customers like his own family. No matter what day or time it was, he was ready to fix a furnace or lend a helping hand.

He loved the outdoors, and in his free time, enjoyed camping and fishing. He was also known for his sense of humor.

Kaler is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Margaret Bassler.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy, of North Bath; a son, Robert Kaler Jr., and his fiancée, Judy Nickerson, of North Bath; a daughter, Donna Marie K. Waterman, and her husband, Richard, of Brunswick; four grandchildren, Ronald and wife, Melissa, Stephen and wife, Katherine, Michael and wife, Tanya, and Brent and wife, Rebecca; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Visiting hours and a funeral were held Aug. 1 at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, in Bath.
