Giving back

More than 100 representatives from Maine’s credit unions were joined by Sue Mitchell, portrayed in the film, "The Blind Side," by Kathy Bates, in announcing that the 2013 Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger raised a record-setting $513,000. This represents an increase of more than $42,000 over 2012’s record-setting total.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Norton Financial Services announced that Jeff Soules has been named financial adviser. A 2011 graduate of USM, Soules specializes in investment advisory services, individual insurance products, personal financial planning and employer sponsored retirement plans. Soules resides in Scarborough.

The Southern Maine Community College Foundation hired an executive director, Joan Cohen, of Portland, to lead the Foundation into the future and expand its impact on the college.

Melissa Anson and Gil Paquette have been appointed to the board of directors of Scarborough Land Trust.

The ACLU of Maine welcomed incoming executive director Alison Beyea. Beyea comes to the ACLU from the University of Maine School of Law, where she served as director of admissions and adjunct professor of juvenile law.

The Portland Harbor Hotel and its restaurant, Eve’s at the Garden, welcomed Stuart Barwise as general manager. 

New Ventures

Rebecca Brewster-Taylor is opening a new, comprehensive, pediatric rehabilitation clinic offering physical, speech and occupational therapy on Wednesday. Located at 321 Lewiston Road, Topsham, Kid Function will offer a collaborative approach to children with disabilities. 

Chris Orestis, senior health care advocate and CEO of Life Care Funding, has published a new free e-book, “Help on the Way,” which details the unfolding crisis of aging Americans with no way to pay for long-term care, ebook.lifecarefunding.com. Orestis is also a Falmouth Town Councilor.

Recognition

Mercy Hospital's Sarah Vasil, registered nurse and sexual assault forensic examiner in the emergency department, received this year's SAFE Award at the annual Blaine House Tea earlier this month. Vasil is recognized by her peers and providers for her exceptional dedication and support of sexual assault victims, as well as the local Sexual Assault Response Team.

Amy Belisle of Maine Quality Counts has been named by the Centers for Disease Control as Maine’s winner of the 2014 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award. Belisle, who resides with her family in Yarmouth, is the director of child health quality improvement at Maine Quality Counts.

Ron Adams, food service director for the Portland Public Schools, has won the School Nutrition Association Outstanding Director of the Year Award for Maine. Adams will be honored at a red carpet awards ceremony on July 13 at SNA’s national conference in Boston.
