Donald Hurd Bartlett, 68
TOPSHAM — Donald Hurd Bartlett, 68, of Topsham died March 3 at his daughter's home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Bath, Sept. 3, 1945, the son of William H. and Mabel Bartlett. He grew up in Bath and attended Morse High School and was employed at Bath Iron Works as a painter. On July 9, 1965, he married his best friend and soul mate, Jacqueline Morin. Bartlett then joined the U.S. Army, where he proudly served for over 22 years, retiring as sergeant 1st class. The couple traveled abroad and raised three children. Upon returning home, they resided in Litchfield.
Bartlett worked at the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department and also the Sagadahoc Sheriff’s Department for many years, until retiring to take care of his wife. He wanted to make sure her last days were spent at home. She predeceased him in 1995.
He had a passion for sports and was a softball coach for many years. He was the president and coach for the Brunswick Women’s Softball League, and coached many other womens’ teams. He then met Stella Cannain and the couple moved to Frenchville. They enjoyed many good times together, playing music, and even hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail. Stella died in 2007.
Bartlett always put his family first. He looked forward to the times spent at camp with his children and grandchildren. He had a heart of gold, a great sense of humor and will always be remembered by those that loved him, especially his canine companions, Maggie and Dodge, who were his constant sidekicks.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline G. Morin Bartlett; sister, Joyce F. Bartlett; brother, David W. Bartlett; and longtime friend, Stella Cannain.
He is survived by sons, Jerry H. Bartlett and Maj. Jason L. Bartlett and wife, Thuy; daughter, Tammy A. Matthews and husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Jason L. Bartlett II, Jaxon C. Bartlett, Brooke V.J. Matthews and Bode J. Matthews; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held March 7 at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, Bath.
