CUMBERLAND — Joanne Carros Cederna, 57, of Cumberland, died peacefully March 11 with her family by her side, after a year-long battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Binghamton, N.Y., Oct. 21, 1956. She spent her formative years in Pontiac, Mich., and later relocated to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where she attended Northern Michigan University and received a bachelor's in biochemistry.

She then moved to Detroit, Mich., where she worked for BASF as a chemist and married her husband of 32 years, John Cederna. She left the workforce to raise her two daughters, Allison and Hillary, in Maine. Later, she returned to work as a data analyst, first at Mercy Hospital in Portland, then at Maine Medical Center, and finally at Maine Medical Partners, where she continued to work until four days before her death.

She was predeceased by her father, Donald Carros.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Arnold; stepfather Richard Arnold; her husband, John, of Cumberland; and her daughters, Allison, of South Portland, and Hillary, of Brookline, Mass.; brother, Don Carros; sister, Pam Carros; and her stepsister, Robin Hill.

Visitation was planned for March 15, at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A private celebration of her life will be held in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Attn: Andrea Herr, 75 Clearwater Drive, Falmouth, ME 04105.
