Falmouth girls' hockey out in regional final; Boys' playoffs near

The girls' hockey season came to a close last week and attention now turns to the boys' side.

The playoff run of the Falmouth girls ended with a 7-0 loss to eventual champion Scarborough in the regional final.

The Yachtsmen, who earned the No. 2 seed in the West Region, blanked No. 3 Biddeford, 5-0, in the semifinals, but the Red Storm scored three goals in both the first and second periods and never looked back.

Falmouth's season ended at 14-6.

There were a lot of questions left to be answered as the boys headed into the final week of their regular season.

In Western A, defending champion Falmouth was 11-5 and second to Scarborough in the Western Class A Heal Points standings at press time. The Yachtsmen hosted Lewiston in a makeup game/rematch of last year's state final Monday and close at home versus Scarborough Thursday.

In Western B, two-time defending champion Greely's seven-game unbeaten streak came to a close last Wednesday, courtesy rival Yarmouth, which beat the Rangers, 5-2, and swept them for the first time in a decade. Austin Rogers and Tommy Thompson scored in the defeat. Greely (7-6-3 and second to Gorham in the Heals) hosted Gardiner Wednesday and also had to make up Saturday's postponed game versus Messalonskee.

Yarmouth improved to 9-5-1 and fourth in Western B thanks to its win over the Rangers (Patrick Grant had a hat trick). The Clippers hosted Gorham in a pivotal showdown Tuesday, welcomed York Wednesday and also needed to make up a weather postponed game at Camden Hills.

The boys' hockey playoffs begin Tuesday of next week with the quarterfinals. Those games will be played on the field of the higher seeds.
