John A. Farrugia, 79: Longtime Portland salesman, cherished family, art

SOUTH PORTLAND — John A. Farrugia Sr., 79, of South Portland, died Jan. 1 with his family by his side, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

He was born in Montreal, Canada, on Dec. 24, 1934, the youngest son of Vincent and Mary Farrugia. He attended Montreal schools.

In 1960, he moved to Maine with his family and soon became a U.S. citizen. Farrugia's commitment and loyalty to the U.S. was evident through his hard work and dedication to his family and his work. Most of his career was spent as a salesman for R.H. Scales Co. in Portland, from which he retired in 2000.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, and had fond memories of trips to Europe, Mexico and Aruba. A trip that he spoke of often and cherished dearly was one that he took with his brother, Arthur, to their parents’ homeland of Malta.

Farrugia was a man of many talents and interests. Upon retirement, he spent hours tinkering with HO trains and comparing the size relationship between model railroads and their real-life counterparts. He also worked with stained glass, creating many beautiful pieces of art. He was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 15 years, and enjoyed boating in Casco Bay. He welcomed a good lobster dinner anytime he could.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of South Portland; his first wife, Madeline Farrugia, of Portland; three children, John A. Farrugia Jr., of Connecticut, Mary Siepert and husband Michael, of Cape Elizabeth, and Pauline Doane and husband Joseph, of Cape Elizabeth; stepchildren, Debra Butterfield and husband James Law, Jeff Butterfield and wife Heather, of Bar Harbor, Mark Butterfield and wife Victoria, and Daryll Butterfield, of Windham; six grandchildren, Carolyn, Joseph, Peter, Evan, Cooper and Alden; five stepgrandchildren, Ariel, Halston, Abigail, Matt and Alison; and a brother, Arthur Farrugia and wife Bernice of Beaconfield, Canada.

A funeral was held Jan. 8 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, South Portland. Burial will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the Farrugia family suggests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.
