Nancy L. Fernald, 85

YARMOUTH — Nancy Lee Fernald, 85, of Yarmouth died at Mercy Hospital in Portland with her family by her side, on Oct. 9, after a brief illness.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1928, the daughter of Evelyn and Bruce Sumner Hascall. She graduated from Scarborough High School, class of 1947.

Fernald was a home maker her entire life and was known as an outstanding cook who made meals large enough to "feed an army." She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, making baby blankets, mittens and scarves. She loved working in her gardens. In later years, she especially enjoyed traveling with her husband, Stan, and trips with friends. Her favorite and most anticipated trip would be going to Boothbay.

She will be remembered for her love, her strength, her genuine caring and readiness to help others. She was always a phone call away. She also had a great love of animals, especially dogs. Most of all, she loved time spent with her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stan; a brother, Norman C. Hascall; a sister, Lois A. Rich; and her granddaughter, Kelli O'Reilly.

She is survived by her five children, Pamela J. Andrews, of Windham, Stephen W. Smith, of Yarmouth, Dianne L. McNeel, and husband, Bart, of Westbrook, Debra L. Lowe, and fiancé, Bill Doughty, of Westbrook and Darrell B. Smith, of Auburn; two stepchildren, Stan Fernald Jr., of Fort Myers, Fla., and Sue McDougal, and husband, Skip, of Westbrook; her grandchildren, Aaron and Melissa McNeel, Kaleb and Courtney Lowe, and Nicole and Matt Smith; great-grandchildren Heather and Deserae O'Reilly; three great-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Julie A. Newcomb, of South Portland.

A time of gathering and visitation was held Oct. 16, at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Burial held at Riverside Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to Yarmouth Fire & Rescue, 176 North Road, Yarmouth, ME 04096.
