Richard B. Harford, 60

BATH — Richard B. Harford, 60, formerly of Bath, died Sept. 27 at his home in Edgecomb with his wife by his side.

He was the son of Russell E. Harford Jr. and Frances Cushing Harford, both of Bath.

He attended Bath schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at a young age, becoming a submarine sailor.

Harford returned to Bath after leaving the service, and in 1977 married Ann Sylvester, also from Bath. He worked for Gene Reynolds & Sons Paving for nearly 35 years, and most recently worked for his friend Gerry Mitchell, of Mitchells Construction, in Bath.

Harford and his wife were married for 36 years and were not parents, but had many friends with children and thought of each of them as their own. Harford shared many hobbies with family and friends, including fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, camping at Longpond and almost anything involving the outdoors. He particularly enjoyed spending time at the “Whitefield camp.” He also loved shooting pool and playing cribbage with longtime friends.

Harford was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed making people laugh, playing jokes on friends and family members, and being the recipient as well. He was an honest man who was remembered for his kind heart and for saying what he thought.

He felt the greatest love and loyalty towards family, spending much time at his sister's holiday gatherings at her home in Bath. He became friends with many of her friends and thought of them as his extended family as well.

Harford loved animals, especially his little dog, Pig.

He is predeceased by his parents, and by an older brother, Gregory Harford, of Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Edgecomb; daughter, Eliza Defreitas, of Brunswick; grandson, Quentin; big sister, Chris Hagan and husband Mel; younger brother, Marc Harford and wife Jen, of Bath; niece, Sheli Boyle and husband Keith and their children Alex, Matt, Quinlan, and Emily, of Bath; nephew, Russ and wife Lauren and their son Owen, of Woolwich; sister-in-law, Penny Harford and family, of Tennessee; brother-in-law, Stevan Sylvester, of Portland; cousins, Ron Abbott and wife Laurie, and "Mickey" Rooney and wife Karen; and former wife, Diane Larrabbee, of Topsham.

A graveside gathering will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at Mountainside Cemetery in Georgetown.

Donations may be made to Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
