Marie L. Letourneau, 93

SOUTH PORTLAND — Marie Louise Letourneau, 93, of South Portland, died Aug. 22 at South Portland Nursing Home.

She was born in Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec, a daughter of John Felix Martin and Alice Morel Martin.

As a young woman she was gifted with tremendous skills in needlecraft and weaving. She shared this skill, teaching the art of tapestry and weaving in Canada.

She married Dennis Letourneau on July 21, 1952, at the St. Lejeune Church in St. Come, Quebec. The family moved to Portland in 1960 when her husband accepted a job as a mechanic working on heavy trucks.

She raised her family in Portland, where she became an active volunteer with many organizations. Her husband died in 1971. In 1975 she moved to South Portland, where she continued to volunteer and was active with the foster grandparents program.

Letourneau was a longtime communicant of Holy Cross Church.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her four sisters, Susan, Alice, Theresa and Presantine, and four brothers, John, Vincent, Lucien and Felix.

She is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne Carr and husband Sean, of South Portland, and Cecile Letourneau of Old Orchard Beach; three sons, Martin Letourneau, of Quebec City, Quebec, Gilles Letourneau and wife Michele, of South Portland, and Paul Letourneau and wife Beth, of South Portland; sisters Germain and Jacqueline, six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service was held Thursday at  Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, in South Portland.
