South Portland fire leaves 7 people homeless
SOUTH PORTLAND — Seven residents of an apartment house at 72 Hill St. were left homeless after a Sunday morning fire now under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
South Portland Fire Department Lt. Robb Couture said no one was injured in the blaze first reported at 12:17 a.m. City firefighters declared an "all hands" alarm, and were assisted by Portland firefighters.
The inhabitants of three apartment units made it out safely, and firefighters rescued two cats and a dog. Couture said it appears the fire started outside the apartment building, went up the exterior wall and spread into the attic. The building is between Hill Street and Broadway, near the triangular intersection of the streets.
Couture said state fire marshals were asked to investigate because the source and spot of ignition were not readily located. A fourth apartment in the building was unoccupied, he said.
