Mid-Coast recap: Action sizzles as spring season hits home stretch
Continued dominance by familiar powers highlighted the week that was. Here's the latest:
Brunswick's boys' lacrosse team stayed undefeated Tuesday night, but it wasn't easy. The Dragons held off Lewiston (a team they routed, 16-1, the first time around), by a 6-5 margin. The victory came on the heels of an 18-2 romp at Cony Friday and left Brunswick 9-0 on the year. The Dragons (first in the Eastern Class A Heal Points standings and fourth in the latest coaches' poll) are idle until Tuesday when they host Mt. Ararat.
The Eagles improved to 7-2 with recent wins over visiting Edward Little (10-5) and at Cony (12-3). Mt. Ararat (third in the Heals) hosted Lewiston Thursday (too late for print) and goes to Brunswick Tuesday.
Morse continues to excel in Eastern B. The Shipbuilders eked out a 12-11 overtime win at Gardiner Friday, then romped 18-5 over visiting Mountain Valley Tuesday to improve to 7-2. Morse (fourth in the Heals) plays at Oak Hill Tuesday.
On the girls' side, Brunswick continues to lead the way.
The Dragons took a 7-0 mark, the top ranking in the Eastern A Heals and the No. 3 spot in the coaches' poll into Wednesday's game (too late for print) at Messalonskee. Last Thursday, Brunswick won 16-3 at Cony. Monday, the Dragons were 19-6 victors at Oxford Hills. They hosted Camden Thursday (also too late for print), then have a week off to prepare for a home game versus Morse.
Speaking of the Shipbuilders, they've won four in a row to improve to 5-3. Last Wednesday, Morse crushed visiting Mountain Valley, 17-5. The following day, the Shipbuilders enjoyed an 11-4 home win over Gardiner. Monday, in a much closer affair, Morse squeaked past visiting Lewiston, 9-7, in overtime. The Shipbuilders (second to NYA in the Eastern B Heals) was at Lincoln Thursday (too late for print) and hosts Mt. Ararat Tuesday.
The Eagles are also on a four-game winning streak. After beating visiting Gardiner 12-1 last Wednesday, Mt. Ararat went to Lewiston and won 11-7 last Thursday. Monday, the Eagles improved to 6-2 with a 17-2 home romp over Edward Little. Mt. Ararat (third in the Heals) was home against Mountain Valley Thursday (too late for print) and goes to Morse Tuesday.
On the diamond, Mt. Ararat has won three straight, the latest a 22-14 home win over Brunswick. The Eagles also defeated Cony (11-6) and Oxford Hills (5-3, in eight innings) in recent action to improve to 5-6. Mt. Ararat (eighth in the latest Eastern A Heals) played at Lewiston Wednesday (too late for print), hosts Leavitt Friday and Morse Tuesday.
Brunswick's loss to Mt. Ararat left it 8-3 on the year. The Dragons had beaten visiting Leavitt, 5-1, last Friday. Brunswick (fourth in the standings) hosted Morse Wednesday (too late for print), welcomes Lawrence Saturday and goes to Edward Little Tuesday.
Morse is still seeking its first win. The Shipbuilders fell to 0-11 Monday after a 3-1 home loss to Oxford Hills. Morse (tied for 15th in the Heals) played at Brunswick Wednesday (too late for print), then is idle until visiting Mt. Ararat Tuesday.
On the girls' side of the diamond, Brunswick dropped to 5-6 Monday after a 2-1, eight inning loss at Mt. Ararat, which left the Eagles 4-7.
The Dragons (eighth in the latest Eastern A Heals) hosted Morse Wednesday (too late for print), plays host to Lawrence Saturday and visits Edward Little Tuesday.

On the hardcourts, the Mt. Ararat boys lead the way with a 7-0 mark, good for second in the latest Eastern A Heals. The Eagles girls' squad is also playing well, boasting a 6-1 mark and the No. 4 ranking.
Morse's girls are enjoying their finest season in a long time. The Shipbuilders were 6-2 and eighth at the end of last week. Morse's boys are 0-9 (and 13th in the standings).
Brunswick's girls are 5-2 and sixth in Eastern A. The boys' team is 4-4 and fifth.
