Cummings Road construction in South Portland to last into June

SOUTH PORTLAND — Getting there from here is more challenging on the western edge of the city because of reconstruction of Cummings Road from just above Running Hill Road to the Westbrook city limit.

Ted Talbot, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, said drivers should expect delays as work on the $1.3 million project continues through mid-June.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane in stretches as the road is repaved and shoulders are widened. Drivers can also expect to be diverted along Gannett Drive.

Cummings Road, one of the major thoroughfares for traffic coming and going from the Maine Mall area, is traveled by an average of 15,000 vehicles daily. Volume is expected to increase to an average of 17,000 vehicles daily by 2025, Talbot said.

Work began last week on the 3/4-mile stretch of road after similar work was completed in Westbrook last year. The city share of the reconstruction cost is $228,000, funded in the capital improvements budget.
