Healey, Martin get Scarborough posts

SCARBOROUGH — Two appointments were made this month to fill town and agency positions previously held by long-tenured officials.

Karen Martin, the acting executive director of the Scarborough Economic Development Corp., was appointed to the position permanently last week.

On Wednesday, Town Councilors unanimously approved the appointment of Bill Healey as the new town assessor.

Martin replaces former SEDCO Executive Director Harvey Rosenfeld, who retired in March after 25 years of leading the quasi-government agency that is funded by the town and overseen by an independent board of directors.

Healey, currently the assessor in Cumberland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth and Denmark, replaces Paul Lesperance. Lesperance retired in April after 29 years.

Formerly the economic development director for the Greater Portland Council of Governments, Martin first joined SEDCO two years ago and said she is looking forward to renewed prosperity in town.

"The town has made great investments in in economic and community developments," she said. "Harvey left me with an awesome team and fantastic opportunities."

Healey fills one of two municipal positions (along with town manager) requiring council approval. Council Chairman Ron Ahlquist and Vice Chairwoman Judy Roy said his expertise and demeanor stood out during the search process.

"I'm excited about the opportunity and looking forward to working with such a strong commercial base," Healey said.
