Detours ahead during rebuilding of I-295 Exit 15 in Yarmouth
YARMOUTH — Construction work for a more than $8 million rebuilding of the Interstate 295 Exit 15 northbound interchange and parking lot is now underway, with road closures slated to start in the next couple of weeks.
Beginning in mid-March, the northbound off-ramp will be closed for the construction of the new on-ramp, which will be extended and designed to allow drivers more time to enter the highway.
Exit 10 (Bucknam Road) in Falmouth and Exit 17 (Route 1) will serve as detours, with temporary traffic signals installed at those exits to help manage the higher traffic volumes, said Ted Talbot, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.
And although construction of the on-ramp will continue into November, the northbound exit will reopen in late June, he said.
"It's quite a major project, but we'll try to keep the impact to the traveler minimal," he said. "We're encouraging drivers to allow extra time to get to their Yarmouth destinations."
No long-term lane closures on I-295 are expected during the project, but drivers should expect short-term traffic delays during blasting operations, Talbot said.
In addition to extending the northbound on-ramp, DOT is also building a 300-car park-and-ride lot. Tree-clearing for that portion of the project is already underway.
