SOUTH PORTLAND — Mary Eva McGinnis, 92, 0f South Portland, died Sunday at her home.

McGinnis was born in Ramer, Tenn., to Evan and Linda Jaggers.

A free spirit, she moved as a young woman to Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was rumored to have beguiled many an up-and-coming movie star.

In 1945, at the end of World War II, she married Lawrence T. McGinnis in South Portland. Because of her husband's military career from 1945 to 1963, the couple moved every two or three years, settling in South Portland following his retirement.

In 1963, she and her husband opened Larry’s Variety Store in Willard Square, where she worked until her early retirement in the 1970s. McGinnis was an avid reader, and enjoyed taking walks through her neighborhood, and talking with her many friends.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, her daughter, Catherine Hincks and two sisters, Vergie Aubuchon and Osa McAllister. She is survived by her son, Larry, of Boulder, Colo.; five grandchildren, Gillian McGinnis, David, Aaron and Noah Hincks, and Maura Kardish; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cornelia “Connie” Chrusciel of Troy, Ill., and Lessie Matchett of St. Louis, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Thursday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
