As the surprisingly good weather continues, fans and athletes alike are thrilled that all spring sports are underway.
Mid-Coast-area schools have impressed in the early going. Here's a glimpse:
Brunswick baseball's undefeated run finally came to an end Monday. The Dragons had won their first five games, including an 11-0 (six inning) triumph at Morse last Wednesday and a 3-0 home win over Edward Little last Friday, but at Cony, Brunswick was held at bay and fell to 5-1 with a 10-4 loss to the Rams. The Dragons host Lewiston Friday, go to Hampden Academy Monday and play host to Oxford Hills Wednesday.
Mt. Ararat is 2-4 to date. The Eagles dropped a 10-9 home decision to Lewiston last Wednesday, bounced back to beat host Morse 11-2 Friday, then fell 3-2 at Leavitt Monday. Mt. Ararat is home with Edward Little Friday, visits Bangor Monday and plays host to Cony Wednesday.
Morse is still seeking its first win. After losing 11-2 to Mt. Ararat Friday, the Shipbuilders fell to 0-6 Monday with a 9-2 loss at Lewiston. Morse is home with Leavitt Friday, goes to Skowhegan Monday and welcomes Edward Little Wednesday.
On the girls' side of the diamond, Mt. Ararat had its three-game win streak snapped Monday with a 5-4 (nine inning) loss to Leavitt. In its previous outing, the Eagles went eight innings to beat Morse, 6-4. Mt. Ararat is home with Edward Little Friday, visits Bangor Monday and plays host to Cony Wednesday.
Brunswick is 2-4 to date. The Dragons lost 7-6 to visiting Edward Little Friday and fell 13-1 at Cony Monday. Brunswick hosts Lewiston Friday, goes to Hampden Academy Monday and plays host to Oxford Hills Wednesday.
Morse got in the win column for the first time Monday, beating host Lewiston 3-1 to improve to 1-5. The Shipbuilders are home with Leavitt Friday, go to Skowhegan Monday and welcome Edward Little Wednesday.
Brunswick continues to rule the boys' lacrosse roost. The defending Eastern A champions improved to 4-0 after Friday's 11-4 victory at Mt. Ararat. The Dragons are home with Oxford Hills Friday and visit Edward Little Tuesday.
The setback was the Eagles' first of the year after four wins. Mt. Ararat hosts Messalonskee Friday and goes to Oxford Hills Tuesday.
Morse blanked visiting Oak Hill 9-0 Friday and rolled 11-2 over visiting Lincoln Academy Monday to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Shipbuilders welcome Mt. Blue Friday and play host to Camden Tuesday of next week.
On the girls' side, Brunswick is also leading the way. The Dragons have scored 49 goals in their three games and put up 21 in a 21-5 home romp over Oxford Hills last Thursday which left them 3-0. After playing at Messalonskee Thursday (too late for print), Brunswick hosts Mt. Ararat Saturday and Edward Little Monday.
The Eagles took a 1-1 mark into Thursday's home game with Gardiner (played after this edition went to print). After visiting Brunswick Saturday, Mt. Ararat plays host to Cony Monday.
Morse got its first win, 10-7 at Lewiston last Thursday, to improve to 1-2. The Shipbuilders hosted Mountain Valley Thursday (too late for print), go to Messalonskee Saturday and visit Camden Monday.
On the hardcourts, Brunswick's boys improved to 3-2 Monday with a 5-0 win at Edward Little. The Dragons girls' team is 3-1 after a 5-0 victory over the Red Eddies Monday.
Morse's boys' squad fell to 0-4 after Monday's 5-0 home loss to Lewiston. The Shipbuilders girls fell to 3-1 with a 5-0 loss to the Blue Devils Monday.
Mt. Ararat is 4-0 following Monday's 5-0 win over Erskine. The Eagles girls squeaked past Erskine 3-2 Monday to also improve to 4-0.
