Longtime South Portland girls' basketball Mike Giordano (with SP athletic director Todd Livingston) is honored prior to Monday's game versus Deering for earning his 200th career victory three days prior at Massabesic. Giordano, the Red Riots coach since 1996, has won 190 regular games and 10 more in the postseason.
"It's emotional," said Giordano. "(Everyone wearing T-shirts today commemorating the 200th win) was something I didn't expect. This isn't about me. When the spotlight's on me I struggle with that. For me, it's about the kids. I looked around the gym today and there were a lot of kids who played for me in the past. I got calls and texts. Those are the things I don't forget. We've had great kids come through here the past 17 years. The thing I'm most proud of is getting 200 wins at one school. I think we've put a pretty good product on the floor for 17 years. As disappointed as I am that we haven't found a way to crown the achievement with a Gold Ball, I'm proud of our accomplishments year in, year out.
"Two wins stick out. We broke McAuley's long home win streak (68-56, on Feb. 10, 2004) and beating them in the semifinals, in a game we had no right to win (39-29, Feb. 23, 2006)."
