Gideon to resign from Freeport Town Council

FREEPORT — A special election will be held Dec. 4 to replace Town Council Vice Chairwoman Sara Gideon, who will resign from the council tonight after deciding to move out of the district she represents.

Gideon, a Democrat who is also running for the Maine House of Representatives in District 106, said her decision to resign from the council came after her family decided to buy a house outside of the town's District 1.

Under the Town Charter, a councilor must live in the district they represent, so moving will disqualify Gideon as District 1 councilor.

"My decision was based solely on the fact that I have to do what's best for my family," she said. "I wouldn't have resigned otherwise."

Gideon announced her resignation in a letter to the council, which scheduled a brief reception in her honor after tonight's meeting.

Gideon, who is moving into District 3, said she is focusing on her candidacy for the state House and does not plan to run for the Town Council in District 3, which is represented by Councilor Kristina Egan.

"I have no other plans than to put all my effort into my campaign," she said. "I have a lot of respect for Councilor Egan and never plan to run against her."

Voting in the special election to fill the remainder of Gideon's District 1 term, which expires in November 2013, will take place from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. at Town Hall.

Nomination papers will be available Thursday at the town clerk's office. Candidates must return their petitions by 6 p.m., Nov. 8.
