Archie Dennison, 83

FREEPORT — Archie Dennison, 83, died on Sept. 13 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after complications of Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in Freeport on June 14, 1929, the son of Archie and Geneva Dennison. He graduated from Freeport High School and was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. His proudest athletic moment was meeting Ted Williams and Joe Dobson of the Red Sox at his baseball banquet.

He enjoyed camping with his family and friends to near and faraway places. He always had jokes to tell and funny songs to sing.

He was an active congregant of the First Parish Church, UCC in Freeport where he taught Sunday school, served on the Board of Deacons, was active in couples and singles club and was church sexton for 30 years.

He was employed by Dingley Press as a folding machine operator and a self-taught linotype operator for 30 years. He also worked in the offices of American Oil Company and Cities Service in Portland. In later years he worked for L.L. Bean as a typesetter retiring in 1992.

Since retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and traveling with his wife to Myrtle Beach and other places. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Dennison is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois; his children Michael Dennison and his wife, Diane, of Freeport, Debra Jordan and her husband, Stephen, of Portland and Lisa Libby, of Durham; seven grandchildren; his sister, Phyllis Garland; and several nieces and nephews.
