Baseball team sizzling

With the weather warming up, Bowdoin's baseball team is doing the same, leading the parade of spring teams.

Baseball

Bowdoin blanked Colby 4-0 last Friday, then completed a season sweep of its rival Sunday with a 3-2, 13-0 doubleheader sweep of the Mules Saturday. Pat Driscoll threw a shutout Friday, extending his scoreless innings streak to 16. in the first game of the twinbill, Carter Butland pitched a complete game and Dan Hicks homered. A nine-run first inning led to an easy win in the nightcap. The Polar Bears are now 15-12 overall (3-3 in NESCAC play). They play at Tufts Friday (single game) and Saturday (doubleheader).

Softball

Bowdoin's softball team swept the University of Maine-Farmington 6-0, 4-3 in a doubleheader last Thursday which gave coach Ryan Sullivan his 100th career victory, becoming the first coach in program history to reach that milestone. Julia Jacobs threw a two-hit shutout in the opener, striking out nine. A three-run home run from Hillary Smyth led the way to victory in the nightcap. Last Friday, the Polar Bears fell 8-1 at Bates. Saturday, they split a doubleheader with Bates. Bowdoin won the first game 4-0 behind another stellar Jacobs start. The Bobcats won the second game, 5-0. The Polar Bears improved to 17-12-1 overall (2-4 in NESCAC) after beating Thomas 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday (the second game was halted due to darkness tied at 5-5). Bowdoin got four hits from Clare Ronan and three from Shavonne Lord in the mercy rule victory. The Polar Bears visited USM Wednesday for two games (too late for this edition), host Tufts for a single game Friday, then have a home doubleheader with the Jumbos Saturday.

Men's lacrosse

The Bowdoin men's lacrosse team lost 10-9 to visiting Endicott last Wednesday and fell 10-7 at Williams Saturday to drop to 7-4 on the season (4-2 in NESCAC). Bowdoin was at Colby Wednesday (too late for this edition) and visits Bates Tuesday.

Women's lacrosse

The Bowdoin women's lacrosse team lost 9-8 at Wellesley last Thursday, but bounced back Saturday with a 10-7 home win over Williams. Katie Stewart had four goals in the loss. Steph Collins-Finn stopped eight shots against the Ephs and tied the school record with her 39th career win. The Polar Bears are idle until Tuesday when they host Bates.

Track

Bowdoin's outdoor track team took part in the Wildcat Invitational in Durham, N.H., last weekend. Grace Kerr (800), Christine Head (pole vault) and Kelsey Borner (discus) finished first for the women. Zach Winters (400) and Nick Ianetta (javelin) were event winners for the men.

Tennis

Bowdoin's men's tennis team is now 9-3 after a 9-0 win at Bates and a 6-3 home loss to Middlebury. The women are 7-5 after last week's 9-0 victory at Colby and Monday's 6-3 win over visiting Middlebury.
