PORTLAND — No injuries were reported in an early morning fire Tuesday in the West End.

Assistant Fire Chief Keith Gautreau said the fire at 19 Dow St., a six-unit apartment building, was reported just after midnight. It seemed to have originated in a ceiling above a second-floor unit, although the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Gautreau said there was “moderate fire damage” to the second-floor apartment and one on the third floor. The building had working smoke detectors, he said.

Access to the building was difficult because it is behind a building at 17 Dow St., Gautreau added. Electricity was shut off to both buildings, and Gautreau said the fire department is working first to get inhabitants back into 17 Dow St.
